FAMILY ABROAD

Most questionnaires issued by the Cuban government for jobs, education and many other endeavors, ask if you have family abroad, especially in the United States. In the past, the mention of relatives living in the United States prevented you from occupying a position in medium to high ranks of the Revolution. That's not the case today. It is estimated that 30% of the urban, white population of the island have relatives abroad. Including Fidel and Raúl Castro. Fidel has one daughter, a granddaughter, sisters and nephews living in the USA and other countries. There is hardly a member of the Cuban nomenclature who does not have a close member of the family residing in the US. The immigration laws of this country are flexible enough to allow Nati Revuelta, former lover of Castro to visit this country. And family members ministers and generals come to the US for medical treatment and recreational travel. Fidel Castro's family members receive medicine, food and clothing from the US. In order to leave the island you have to obtain permission from the Cuban authorities. Permission to travel is routinely denied to persons they consider unfriendly to the government.




Study Medicine in Cuba

US representative from Texas, Ciro D. Rodríguez (D-28) has announced on his in his web site a program offered by the Cuban government to study medicine in Cuba. His office will provide application forms to interested parties.

This invitation is a well orchestrated piece of political propaganda. To study at a Cuban university or college, applicants are required to show a detailed list of revolutionary activities from birth. This includes information on "volunteer" work in factories and agricultural fields, attendance at political indoctrination schools, participation in demonstrations against the US government and its policies and a disclaimer about being part of any religious organization. Students in Cuba are also required to list membership in communist youth organizations. If you don't comply with these requirements you are not allowed to study in any college, regardless of your academic credentials.

Congressman Ciro Rodríguez is a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He aspires to lead this committee some day.




Limousine Liberals

Q. What is the real meaning of the phrase Limousine Liberals. Who is the author? H.B. Quebec, Canada.

A. I could not find a specific author of this phrase. This is an ironic term used to describe socialist or liberal persons who advocate economic social reforms but live a life of luxury. Examples: Senators Ted Kennedy, and Hillary R. Clinton, millionaire Ted Turner, his wife, former actress Jane Fonda and the like.


Movie Actors

Q. How many American movie actors have charged Cuba with violations of the human rights of its citizens? N.W.E. San Francisco, CA

A. In general, movie personalities do not mix in politics. However, some of them do it. Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Harry Belafonte, Gregory Peck, Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand and others have shown sympathies for Fidel Castro. On the other hand, Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Robert Taylor, Ronald Reagan, Robert Montgomery, and Charleton Heston can be counted on the side of conservatives.




Castro the Athlete

Q. Is it true that Fidel Castro had the qualifications for being a professional basketball or baseball player? M.K.R. Reno, Nevada.

A. When Castro was in high school, he was considered to be a proficient athlete. However, I doubt his qualifications were in any way notable beyond those of a normal high school level player. Being in power, Fidel liked to show off as a gifted athlete. Upon hearing that Wilt Chamberlain had scored 100 points in a game of basketball, he tried to duplicate the record. He was successful after playing for two and a half hours with nobody guarding him. He is very proud of his achievement.




Progressive and Liberal

Q. What is the difference between the political terms progressive and liberal? O.P.L. Pensacola, Fl.

A. The political dictionaries are full of modern day euphemisms. Traditionally the term liberal was applied to persons who believe in a maximum of liberties with a minimum of government interference. With time, the term liberal became to be the opposite. A person with a marked tendency to socialist or totalitarian ideas. The term progressive is used to denote persons with communist, anarchist or totalitarian affiliations. Progressive in modern political language is the equivalent in nutrition to an overactive gastronomic consumer: a person who believe in excess.




Roberto Robaina

Q. What became of the Foreign Minister Robertico Robaina? M.J.J. Chicago, Il.

A. Robaina used to enjoy the love and grace of Fidel Castro. He was dismissed and sent to a reeducation center in the city of Güines without explanation. Some people have talked to him lately and said "he doesn't know what happened." Others, in positions to know, claim that Castro got tired of Robaina's Miami Vice clothing and style claiming that he said: "I don't have a Minister, but a clown in charge of foreign policy". However, there are people in Spain that say he managed to be invited with his family for a short vacation in the motherland when he was sacked. Perhaps his intention was to put distance between himself and the Comandante. Maybe the truth is a combination of all these rumors with a bit of cocaine trafficking on the side.




Venezuela and the USA

Very often I receive questions about the passivity of the US toward Venezuela. I will try to answer them in general. Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has been very cautious in his dealing with this country in spite of his left leanings. Up to now, he hasn't moved openly against the US. The Venezuela watchers of this country don't want to cast the first stone and are patiently watching the events from the stands. This country has enough information about Venezuela and Chávez to move at a moment's notice. A confrontation between Chávez and his Armed Forces seems inevitable, and Washington doesn't want to be associated with this predictable event.

Chávez and his followers will not be provided the opportunity to play the tune of David vs Goliath. If needed Venezuelan oil can easy be replaced by fuel from other countries. Most probably Chávez will run out of patience and enter into the blind alley of confrontation with some of his neighbors. It is up to the Venezuelans to stand against Chávez. The world has changed since 1959, when Castro turned to the Soviets for protection.

At the same time, the public figure of Chávez has not caught the fancy of the public. Chávez is virtually unknown, and lacks a photogenic image. He looks like Mr. Nobody under a beret.




Cubans Name Names

With the advent of instant communication and publicity, nobody in the government feels safe in Cuba. Recent interviews with defectors tell us that the naming of names of people in jails, dissidents and other persons persecuted for political reasons is causing panic among Castro's secret police. Presently, nobody in power enjoys the security of anonymity on the island. The names of all the thugs and other abusive people are being recorded for future reference.




Cousin in Yuma

The United States in Cuban slang is known as Yuma. In Cuba, to have a cousin in Yuma is an asset. High ranking members in the Cuban government are always looking for somebody "with a cousin in Yuma" to obtain needed dollars, medicines and clothing. If you have a friendly cousin in Yuma with a good supply of fulas (dollars) you have it made.




Out of jail?

Q. I have heard that General Patricio de la Guardia Font is out of jail. Is that possible? A.J.H. Valencia, España.

A. General Patricio de la Guardia, incarcerated in 1989 after the trial of General Arnaldo Ochoa, is reportedly in a more relaxed environment. I can't say he is completely out of jail, but he is permitted to be with his family and selected friends.


Is Castro a Fascist or a Communist?

There is confusion about these terms. Both are left socialist ideologies that attack those who stand for democracy and individual freedoms. They differ in degree but not too much in substance. Castro, at the beginning of his political career at Havana University, was an ardent admirer of fascism and Nazism. According to fellow students and professors, Castro was a big fan of Benito Mussolini and Adolph Hitler.




EDICIÓN EN ESPAÑOL

Familia en el Exterior

La mayor parte de los cuestionarios del gobierno cubano para trabajos, estudios y muchas otras cosas preguntan si usted tiene familia en el exterior, especialmente en Estados Unidos. En el pasado solamente mencionar que tenía familiares en Estados Unidos bastaba para que no ocupara un trabajo de mediana a alta posición en el gobierno. Pero, esto ha cambiado. Se estima que un 30% de la población blanca, urbana tiene parientes en el exterior. Esto incluye a Fidel y Raúl Castro. Fidel tiene una hija, una nieta, hermanas y sobrinos que viven en Estados Unidos y otros países. Es muy difícil encontrar un miembro de la nomenclatura cubana que no tenga un familiar cercano viviendo en Estados Unidos.

Las leyes de inmigración de este país son suficientes flexibles para permitir que Nati Revuelta, antigua amante de Fidel Castro, visite este país. Al mismo tiempo, familiares de ministros y generales del régimen vienen a este país de paseo y para recibir tratamiento médico. La misma familia de Castro recibe medicinas, alimentos y ropas de los Estados Unidos. Para poder viajar desde Cuba se necesita el permiso de las autoridades. Éste es negado a personas desafectas al gobierno.




Estudie Medicina en Cuba

Posiblemente esto lo considere valioso para incluirlo en sus reportes. R.C. Austin, TX.

El representante por Texas al Congreso, Ciro D. Rodríguez (D-28), está anunciando en su página de la Web un programa que ofrece el gobierno cubano para estudiar medicina en Cuba. Él anuncia que su oficina provee las solicitudes a las personas interesadas.

El congresista Ciro Rodríguez es un miembro del Comité de las Fuerzas Armadas de la Cámara de Representantes. Aspira a ser el jefe de este Comité algún día.

Esta invitación es una bien orquestada pieza de propaganda política. En Cuba para estudiar en las universidades los alumnos tienen que mostrar una lista de actividades revolucionarias desde que nacieron. Se requiere que los estudiantes muestren prueba de "trabajo voluntario" en fábricas y campos de agricultura. Así como asistencia a escuelas de adoctrinamiento político, participación en demostraciones de protesta contra los Estados Unidos y su política y, no ser parte de ninguna organización religiosa. Se requiere de los estudiantes el pertenecer a organizaciones comunistas juveniles. Si el alumno no cumple con estos requerimientos no le es permitido estudiar en ninguna universidad de la nación. No importa sus credenciales académicas.




Liberales de Limousines

P. ¿Cuál es el verdadero significado de liberales de limousines, quién es el autor de esta frase? H.B. Quebec, Canada.

R. No he podido encontrar al autor de la frase. Este es un término irónico usado para describir socialistas o personas que abogan por reformas económicas o sociales, pero viven una vida de riquezas y lujos. Los ejemplos abundan: Ted Kennedy, Hillary R. Clinton, Ted Turner, Jane Fonda y otros.




Artistas de Cine

P. ¿Cuántos artistas de cine han acusado a Cuba de violación de Derechos Humanos de sus ciudadanos? N.W.E. San Francisco, CA

R. En general las personalidades del cine no se mezclan en la política, pero algunas lo hacen. Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Harry Belafonte, Gregory Peck, Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand y otros han mostrado sus simpatías por Fidel Castro. Por otro lado, Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Robert Taylor, Ronald Reagan, Robert Montgomery y Charles Heston han sido conservadores.




Castro el Atleta

P. ¿Es verdad que Fidel Castro tenía calidad para haber sido un profesional del baloncesto o béisbol? M.K.R. Reno, Nevada.

R. Cuando Castro estaba en la escuela secundaria era considerado un buen atleta. Sin embargo, dudo que sus atributos fueran más allá de un nivel inter colegial. Estando en el poder le gustaba mostrarse como un atleta privilegiado. Cuando supo que Will Chamberlain había establecido el récord de 100 puntos anotados en un juego quiso duplicar la hazaña. Logró hacerlo después de jugar dos horas y media sin que nadie se opusiera. Se encuentra muy orgulloso de su proeza.




Progresistas y Liberales

P. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre Progresistas y Liberales en términos políticos? O.P.L. Pensacola, Fl.

R. Los diccionarios políticos modernos están llenos de eufemismos. Tradicionalmente el término liberal se aplicaba a las personas que estaban a favor de todo tipo de libertades políticas con un mínimo de interferencia gubernamental. Con el tiempo esta definición varió a su opuesto. Los actuales liberales son personas con una marcada tendencia a ideas socialistas o totalitarias. El término progresista es usado para señalar a personas con afiliación al totalitarismo comunista, anarquismo u otras ideologías radicales. Progresista en el argot de términos políticos imperante, es el equivalente en la nutrición a un desmesurado consumidor gastronómico: una persona que cree en excesos.




Roberto Robaina

P. ¿Qué pasó con el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores Roberto Robaina? M.J.J. Chicago, Il.

R. Robaina disfrutó de la confianza y cariño de Fidel Castro. Pero, súbitamente fue sacado de su cargo y enviado a un centro de reeducación (cárcel) de la ciudad de Güines sin mayores explicaciones. Algunas personas que han hablado con él últimamente dicen "que él no sabe lo que sucedió". Otros, qué deben saber lo que pasa, explican que Castro se cansó de sus ropas tipo Miami Vice y su ligero estilo de vida, citando que el Comandante dijo: "Yo no tengo a un ministro sino un payaso al frente de Relaciones Exteriores". Sin embargo, hay personas en España que dicen que Robaina se las arregló para ser invitado con toda su familia a la Madre Patria para unas vacaciones y en esos momentos fue sacado del trabajo. Tal vez su intención era poner distancia con el Comandante. Es posible que la verdad se encuentre en una combinación de todas estas versiones añadiendo por otro lado: tráfico de cocaína.




Venezuela y USA

Muy a menudo recibo cartas comentando la pasividad de los Estados Unidos respecto a Venezuela. Trataré de responder estas preguntas en forma generalizada. El presidente venezolano Hugo Chávez ha sido muy cauteloso en todo lo referente a sus relaciones con este país a pesar de sus inclinaciones marxistas. Hasta el momento él no se ha movido abiertamente contra Estados Unidos. Los encargados de vigilar a Venezuela en este país no quieren arrojar la primera piedra y observan pacientemente el desarrollo de los eventos desde sus asientos. Este país cuenta con suficiente información sobre Venezuela y Chávez para actuar en un momento dado. El choque entre Chávez y sus Fuerzas Armadas es inevitable y Washington no quiere que lo asocien con este predecible hecho. A Chávez y sus seguidores no les presentarán la oportunidad de tocar la vieja melodía de David y Goliat. Por otro lado, en caso de crisis, el petróleo venezolano puede ser fácilmente remoplazado por otros países. Es muy probable que Chávez se impaciente y entre en el callejón sin salida de confrontar algunos de sus vecinos. Es el turno de los venezolanos de enfrentarse a Chávez. El mundo ha cambiado mucho desde 1959 cuando Castro tomó el poder y corrió a los soviéticos en busca de protección. Por otro lado, la figura de Chávez no disfruta de la admiración del público. Virtualmente es un desconocido que carece de poder fotogénico y publicitario. Es descrito en Washington como un Don Nadie con una boina puesta.




Cubanos Mencionan Nombres

Con el imperio de las comunicaciones y publicidad instantánea nadie en la maquinaria represiva de Cuba se siente seguro. En recientes entrevistas con desertores hemos conocido que la mención de nombres por disidentes y otros perseguidos políticos de Cuba está causando pánico entre la policía política castrista. Actualmente, nadie disfruta de la impunidad que da el anonimato en la isla. Todos los nombres de las personas abusadoras son anotados y publicados en el exterior.




Primos en Yuma

Los Estados Unidos en el moderno argot cubano son conocidos como Yuma. En Cuba tener un primo en Yuma es algo útil y valioso. Altos miembros del gobierno de Cuba están siempre buscando "alguien que tenga un primo en Yuma" para la obtención de dólares, medicinas o ropas. Si usted tiene un primo en Yuma con abundante fulas (dólares) "está hecho".




¿Fuera de la Cárcel?

P. He oído que el General Patricio de la Guardia Font, ha salido de la cárcel en Cuba. ¿Es esto verdad? A.J.H. Valencia, España.

R. El General Patricio de la Guardia fue encarcelado en 1989 después del proceso contra el General Arnaldo Ochoa. Se reporta que actualmente se encuentra en un ambiente más relajado. No puedo decir que está fuera de la cárcel, pero le es permitido reunirse con familiares y selectos amigos.




¿Es Castro Fascista o Comunista?

Hay confusión acerca de estos términos. Ambas son ideologías izquierdistas que atacan a los que apoyan la democracia y libertades individuales. Difieren en grados, pero no en substancia. Castro, al principio de su carrera política en la Universidad de La Habana, era un ferviente admirador del fascismo y nazismo. Benito Mussolini y Adolph Hitler, de acuerdo con sus compañeros de estudio y profesores eran venerados por Castro.
