Castro's Health

Many readers want to know about Castro's health. It is a known fact that cancer runs in his family. His parents suffered from the disease, and his older brother, Ramon, is under treatment for prostate cancer. Castro was diagnosed with colon-rectal cancer in 1990. I interviewed the doctor who operated on him. At this writing, Castro appears thin and tired, but I don't have a reliable report about his health at this time.


Castro's Successor

Raul Castro, Fidel's younger brother, is the apparent heir, but many people consider his ascent to power unlikely. Raul has a reputation of being a hard-liner and an unstable alcoholic. It is well-known that he suffers from acute depression and is perhaps too old. On June 3, 2001, he will be 70.

In the Cuban Armed Forces there are two groups defined by age. The Old Guard is composed of those who fought in the insurrection - now with a minimum age of 60. The New Revolutionaries are all younger than 60. Raul and General Abelardo (Furry) Colome Ibarra, 62, are considered the two most powerful men in the country. Raul is First Vice President and Colome is Minister of the Interior (Intelligence). Among civilians, the top figure is the Vice President, Carlos Lage. Lage is considered to be a gray person in terms of popularity.

The most radical group is the Old Guard. They are regarded as the fundamentalists of the regime. It is a question mark as to who might have the power to unite the Armed Forces outside of Raul and Colome.


The "Seduction" of Fidel Castro.

Yousuf Karsh, from Quebec, Canada, is one of the most famous photographers in the world. Among his major credits are photographs of Winston Churchill, Pope Pius XII, every American president since Franklin D. Roosevelt and Albert Einstein. In the early '70's, Karsh traveled to Havana to photograph Castro. Karsh was able to get Fidel to appear bare-chested and to pose in other ways that came to his, and to the photographer's fancy. This is the only time that Castro permitted anything beyond the usual sober, staged (and fully-clothed) photographs of himself.

When Castro became aware of the product of his portrait session with Karsh, he was furious and tried to retrieve the negatives and prints. Karsh did not yield to either the offer of money or threats. Many of these pictures have appeared in a book by Karsh. Few in Cuba have seen these hedonistic and frivolous images of the Cuban president. Castro is unique, as the only politician who has posed semi-nude for Karsh. He still regrets the photographs.


Reverend Jackson - A Father Again

Q: I want you to comment on the recently-discovered extramarital affairs of Jesse Jackson. L.M. C. El Paso, TX

A: Recently the press brought this issue to the surface. It is very unfortunate. Jackson is in a precarious situation, since many people will call him a hypocrite when they compare his national stature as a preacher (and counselor to President Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky affair) to his private life at the same time. He has admitted legal and moral responsibility for his paternity. He fathered a girl who is now 20 months old. While the terms of the agreement with the mother of the child are unknown to me, the press has reported that he paid the mother $40,000 for relocation purposes and has pledged to continue support payments of $10,000 a month.

But Jackson is a very rich man and can afford it. Jackson has said he will take a break from his public and political activities for a while. He will be fortunate if this publicity doesn't bring more women to the surface. Jackson has a reputation of being accommodating with women. What may be more damaging to "Reverend" Jackson is that his followers will be made aware that he is a wealthy man who has made his fortune as an advocate for and defender of the poor. Jackson is known to be the top person in this prosperous field. Is estimated that his wealth is in the millions.


The Cuban Colin Powell

Q: Is it true that Fidel Castro has a general who Cubans jokingly describe as their version of Colin Powell? G.H.M. Montgomery, AL

A: You are referring to General Orlando Almaguer. He is a well-educated general - very popular in the army. He keeps a low profile.

If True, They Can Not Shoot Straight

Q: The Cuban government claims that the CIA has attempted 600 times to kill Castro. What is the truth? G.G.R. Santurce, PR

A: If you divide 600 by 42 years that Castro has been in power, it would give an average of 14 failed attempts per year. If that were true, the CIA should be investigated by Congress for inefficient work performance.


The Aztec Eagle

Mexican President Vicente Fox aspires to be the moral and political voice of Latin America. He is beginning to be seen as such by many on this continent. President Fox will meet in the near future with President George W. Bush to exchange points of view with his American counterpart.

Fox, who is far from being a leftist, appointed Ricardo Pascoe as Ambassador to Cuba. Pascoe is known as a leftist and Cuban sympathizer. Cuba and Mexico were on bad terms during the presidency of Ernesto Zedillo. The former President was upset about Cuba's support of the insurgents in the state of Chiapas, and President Zedillo was also troubled by the permission given to former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari to "operate" in Cuba.

President Fox hopes that the transition to democracy in Cuba will be "less painful" with Mexican help. It is expected that during his visit to Havana in the Spring, Fox will be able to discuss his own views on Cuba and perhaps give Castro a timely picture of United States' policy toward the island.


Rosita Fornés

Q: What became of the vedette Rosita Fornés? Is she still alive? D.R.M. Honolulu, Hawaii

A: Rosita Fornés, now 79 years old, was recently honored in Cuba for her long career in show business. She tried to perform in Miami in 1996 but was boycotted by Cuban exiles.


A Man For South of the Border

Roger Noriega, an expert in Latin American politics and a senior aide to Senator Jesse Helms, is being considered for a top job in The Bush Administration. One observer noted that Noriega night be offered a post in the State Department or on the National Security Council.


Why we Lost Colombia?

This is a question that the George W. Bush's Administration is afraid be asked the future. The situation in Colombia is more difficult than people can imagine. There is agreement in Washington intelligence and military circles that the Colombian government might win the war in the long term, but will need a lot of political and material help from the United States. What will be the strategy of the Bush Administration? Advisors agree that there is a need to make the American people aware that the fall of Colombia could lead to further chaos south of the border. And the fate of Colombia is linked closely to the future for Venezuela and Panama. Latin America will be on the front burner of this Administration. More on this in future issues.

Muchos lectores quieren saber acerca de la salud de Fidel Castro. Es un hecho conocido que hay un historial de cáncer en su familia. Sus padres sufrieron de cáncer. Ramón su hermano mayor está en tratamiento de cáncer de la próstata. Castro en 1990 fue diagnosticado con cáncer del colon. Entrevisté al médico que lo operó.

El Sucesor de Castro.

Raúl Castro, el hermano menor de Fidel es el aparente heredero. Sin embargo, muchos consideran que no lo será. Tiene reputación de ser de una línea muy dura y es alcohólico y muy inestable. Es muy conocido que sufre de depresión aguda y, quizás, muy viejo. El próximo 3 de junio cumplirá 70 años.

En las fuerzas armadas cubanas hay dos grupos bien definidos por la edad. La Vieja Guardia está compuesta por personas que pelearon cuando la insurrección. Tienen un mínimo de 60 años de edad. Y los Nuevos revolucionarios, todos menores de 60 años. Raúl Castro y el General Abelardo (Furry) Colomé Ibarra, 62, están considerados como los hombres más poderosos en Cuba después de Fidel. Raúl Castro es Primer vicepresidente y Colomé Ministro del Interior (Inteligencia). Entre los civiles la más alta figura es el vicepresidente Carlos Lage. Este último es considerado una figura gris en términos de popularidad. La Vieja Guardia es el grupo más radical de Cuba conocidos también como los fundamentalistas. Es una interrogación quién tendría el poder de unir las fuerzas armadas fuera de Raúl y Colomé.

Karsh convenció a Castro para que posara con el torso desnudo y en muchas otras poses que quiso. Ésta ha sido la única vez que Castro haya permitido a alguien tomar estas fotografías fuera de sus serias poses habituales. Cuando Castro se dio cuenta lo que había hecho se puso furioso y trató de obtener los negativos y las fotos. Karsh no cedió ni ante el dinero ni las amenazas. Muchas de estas fotografías aparecieron en un libro de Karsh. Pocas personas en Cuba han visto estas narcisistas y frívolas fotos. Castro es el único político que ha posado semidesnudo para Karsh. Todavía Castro lamenta estas fotografías.


Jesse Jackson Padre de Nuevo.

P. Quiero que comente acerca del reciente caso de relaciones extra maritales que reveló la prensa en el caso de Jesse Jackson. L.M. C. El Paso, TX

R. Recientemente la prensa trajo esto a la superficie. Es muy lamentable. Jackson está en una situación precaria ya que muchas personas lo llaman hipócrita. Su amante quedó embarazada cuando él actuaba como consejero espiritual del Presidente Bill Clinton cuando el escándalo de Mónica Lewensky. Él ha admitido responsabilidad moral y financiera por su actuación. Es el padre de una niña de 20 meses de edad. Desconozco los términos del arreglo financiero que acordó con la madre, la prensa ha reportado que pagó $40,000 por la mudada de la madre y la niña y $10,000 al mes por cuidado de la niña. Ver:

Sin embargo, esto no es problema para Jackson que es un hombre muy rico. Jackson a dicho que tomará un descanso temporal de la política. Navegará con mucha suerte si toda esta publicidad no trae historias de más mujeres a la palestra. Jackson tiene la reputación de ser muy acomodaticio con mujeres. Lo más dañino para el "reverendo" es que sus seguidores sepan que es un hombre muy rico. Él es conocido como la figura cimera de la próspera industria de la defensa de los pobres. Su fortuna se estima en varios millones de dólares.


El Colin Powell Cubano.

P. ¿Es cierto que Fidel Castro tiene un general que en la isla llaman en broma el Collin Powell cubano? G.H.M. Montgomery, AL

R. Usted se está refiriendo al General Orlando Almaguer. Éste es un general académico y muy popular en el ejército. Se mantiene alejado de la publicidad.

Si es Verdad, No Tienen Buena Puntería.

P. El gobierno cubano dice que la CIA ha intentado matar a Castro 600 veces. ¿Qué hay de cierto en esto? G.G.R. Santurce, PR

R. Si usted divide 600 entre 42 años que lleva Castro en el poder tenemos un promedio de 14 atentados fallidos por año. Si eso es cierto la CIA debe ser investigada por el Congreso por ineficiencia en el cumplimiento del trabajo.


El Águila Azteca.

El Presidente mexicano aspira a ser la voz política y moral de Latinoamérica. Y muchos comienzan a verlo de esta manera en el continente. Fox se entrevistará próximamente con el Presidente George W. Bush para compartir puntos de vista con su homólogo estadounidense. En lo que respecta a Cuba, Fox, que está lejos de ser un izquierdista, nombró a Ricardo Pascoe como embajador en la isla. Pascoe es un conocido izquierdista y simpatizante de Cuba comunista. Cuba y México estuvieron en mal términos durante la presidencia de Ernesto Zedillo. El antiguo presidente de México estaba enojado por el apoyo de Cuba a los insurgentes del estado de Chiapas encabezados por el Subcomandante Marcos. También por el permiso para "operar" en Cuba al expresidente mexicano Carlos Salinas de Gortari. El Presidente Fox espera que la ayuda mexicana haga "menos dolorosa" la transición a la democracia de Cuba. Se espera que Fox visite a Cuba esta primavera y pueda presentar claramente la posición del Presidente Bush y la suya al respecto.


Rosita Fornés

Q. ¿Qué pasó con Rosita Fornés, vive todavía? D.R.M. Honolulu, Hawaii

A. Rosita Fornés, 79, fue recientemente homenajeada en Cuba por su larga carrera artística. Ella intentó trabajar en Miami en 1996 y fue boicoteada por los cubanos exiliados.


El Hombre del Sur de la Frontera.

Roger Noriega, un experto en política latinoamericana y mano derecha del Senador Jesse Helms (R-NC), está siendo considerado para una posición cimera en la Administración de George W. Bush. Noriega puede escoger entre el Concejo Nacional de Seguridad y el Departamento de Estado.


¿Por qué perdimos a Colombia?

Esta será la pregunta que la Administración the Bush teme que se haga en un futuro. La situación en este país latinoamericano es más difícil que lo que las personas se imaginan en esta nación. Existe un convencimiento en círculos de Inteligencia y Militares en Washington que el gobierno colombiano pudiera a lo largo ganar esta guerra contra las guerrillas comunistas. Pero, Colombia necesitará mucha ayuda política y material de Estados Unidos. ¿Cuál será la estrategia de la Administración de Bush? Muy temprano aún para decir, pero los consejeros están de acuerdo que es necesario hacer entender al pueblo americano que si Colombia cae habrá caos al sur de la frontera. Además, el destino de Colombia está eslabonado con Venezuela y Panamá. Latino América será asunto de primera prioridad en esta Administración, no por diseño sino necesidad.
